Coachella Valley | Palm Springs | Family Photographer » The Modern Day Selfie

Back before the “selfie” was known as what it is today, we grew up with the timer mode on our cameras. I know, I am totally aging myself when I say this, but hey…it’s true. We didn’t grow up with smartphones or the like, we actually had to carry cameras around everywhere we went. As a pro photographer, I’ll confess: I am a horrible selfie-taker. Horrible. I haven’t quite figured out exactly why I’m so horrible at it…short arms, maybe?

During the Easter holiday, we always head to the desert for our annual Spring Break getaway. The Palm Desert area is our happy place – hiking, sunshine, pool fun, and just a slower pace to reconnect – we spend a lot of time out there.

So let’s point out another reason why I’m a horrible photo person – I rarely ever take family photos of my own family (ugh, I know, right?). We’ve narrowed it down to the fact that we are too busy having fun and being present, that we don’t slow down for photos. Well, a few years, I decided that I was going to put a stop to it. I mean, we get all dressed up for Easter – it’s the ONLY time I put on nice clothes and makeup – and we don’t take photos? Absurd, I tell you.

And since we don’t take selfies (see above post for reason), I brought my “work” camera with me, set it on timer & tripod and made everyone stand for photos. It was quick, easy and kind of funny because as we waited for the shutter to click, I would direct the photo as if I were talking to my clients. All in all, I think it was pretty successful, don’t you?

Friends who are reading this…do you often remember to take photos when you travel? If you do, how do you manage to get your photos taken? Selfie or camera timer? Would love to hear about it in the comments!
